experimental measurement of the attenuation of alpha, beta and gamma radiation by a galvanized steel containment cylinder. this "gamma gun" was built not as a weapon, but merely a means of minimizing researchers' exposure to potentially harmful ionizing radiation. when "off", the gun contains approximately 90% of the radiation emitted by the caesium. when "on", the gun fires a directional beam of radiation at a target while continuing to shield bystanders. (in contrast, the original caesium source could not be "switched off", and sprayed radiation in all directions at all times! no bueno...) this is an NRC-exempt quantity of radioisotope sealed in a polymer disc designed for safe laboratory use.
