Chainsaws and diesel trucks are being heard across our viewing area, especially in Red Bank where plenty of damage was done."We were out of power for 16 hours the last time this happened," said Greg Otvos who lives on Charles Avenue in Red Bank. Last night, his neighbor's tree snapped in two and fell on a power line. Greg's power didn't go out this time, but he says it's just a waiting game until it does again."The problem is people don't prune their trees or they let them grow too long, or they can't afford to cut them down, and then we get a storm and this is what happens," said Otvos.Meanwhile, the homeowner has a slightly bigger problem on his mind, and that's how he's going to get the tree off the roof of his home."We worked yesterday from 7:30 until 6, and then went back out last night and worked until after 12, but yes, we'll stay out here all day," said Greg Hardin with Paul Bunyan's Tree Service. Most of the massive tree was off the roof within a half hour of Greg Hardin's crew getting there, and it was the third of 10 jobs they had to get to Friday. Hardin was hoping the early morning cloud cover would stick around."Today it's overcast so it ain't so bad, but normally when the sun is beating down, it's real hot up there on the roof," said Hardin.Hardin says even though the tree fell on a power line, as a safety precaution, they do make sure they call the electric companies to make sure power is turned off in the area.
Kids Rotary Cutter - http://amzn.to/2dPZd0E Chainsaw - http://amzn.to/2e9iLAD --- http://www.jandjacres.net/2013/09/24/using-rotary-cutter/ Ever since I mentioned that we bought a tractor and that the first chore was to level our driveway, people have been asking for a video of the tractor in action. Today is that day. Overgrown Property The problem: overgrown property. The chosen solution: a 6 foot rotary cutter (namely, a Bush Hog - BH16). It was clear when we purchased our property that the land had been selectively cut for timber at some point. There were a lot of stumps and a lot of young growth trees. You could easily walk a path that seemed to be where a vehicle had traveled before. Thankfully, some older growth remained as well. We maintained a good section of that path for a while with a heavy-duty "garden tractor". However, the path proved too rugged for it and there were areas that quickly overgrew. These areas would remain blocked from easy access for several years. Property Clearing We have wanted to clear out a portion of our land for some time. We want it more open for pasture for animals. If we were to try and fence our property right now the only viable solution would be to use barbed wire stapled on to living trees. That does not suit us. There has been talk over the last 5 years of me going out, particularly in winter, and clearing out the land. It hasn't happened yet. However, now the tractor and rotary cutter can be used to clear out a large portion of underbrush, giving way to the larger trees that I will fell with a chainsaw. And, the tractor can help move the fallen trees to better areas for use as well. Permaculture Considerations Even Bill Mollison talks of being fine with using a bulldozer, yet somehow I feel a little twang in me when I run over a huge patch of wildflowers with the rotary cutter. I know they will come back, but still. That said, anything I destroyed by bush hogging it is somewhere else on the property. We have 7 acres and I am confident that I did not eradicate any singularly special habitat. Using a Rotary Cutter I did run in to some complications, all dealing with uneven land. The rotary cutter was set at about 1/2 height most of the time, yet still I would have an issue with it bottoming out. I even killed the engine once doing that (see the video below), causing my wife to come running out to be sure I was okay - it made a pretty horrible "ka-thunk" when it did it. But all was well. A suggestion: I had done this from the start, and it seemed to help. If I knew I was going over a tree I kept the box blade high, letting it cut the tree down from about a foot and a half off of the ground. I would then make a second pass and lower the rotary cutter down on top of the stump slowly, letting it chip away at it. I have certainly gained a new respect for the machine, and perhaps you will too if you watch the videos below. #tractor #homesteading #brushhog #clearingland #kubota
by John Pless Thursday night's violent gust front claimed the lives of a grandmother and her ten-year-old granddaughter. They were among a family of 12 who left the Lakeshore Marina and went north for an evening out. They were caught by that violent wind storm that caused so much damage around town. The bottom deck is all that's left of the family's double-decker pontoon. It was towed to shore several hours after high winds flipped it over with all 12 people on board.Lake front home owner Don Godsey said "waves were starting to pile up out there."Godsey was walking his dog outside his lake front back yard as the storm rolled in."My wife said oh my gosh, there's a boat turned over, she didn't know what kind of boat," Godsey said. "And at that moment a fisherman comes out and starts picking up people -- couldn't tell, maybe five, six or seven but he was getting them."Godsey's neighbor, Mike Brown, got out in his boat to help too. The rescue continued despite the punishing wind and waves that many said were four to five feet. Ten of the 12 victims were rescued but the girl and her grandmother were in more serious trouble."You could hear people saying there's two underneath, there's two underneath and it seemed like forever, maybe five to eight minutes but they got those out and got them to shore," Godsey said. It's not clear whether the victims drowned or suffered trauma when the pontoon boat fell on them and trapped them underwater. Neighbors performed CPR on the girl and her grandmother while waiting for paramedics.Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency officers said said the family did everything right -- keeping the kids in life jackets and heading to shore when the storm approached."Like a lot of folks on the water the storm came up real fast and caught a lot of people off guard, they saw the weather was getting rough so they decided to make a run across the riv

Brush hog is on the 4x4 Yanmar tractor. It is time to brushhog the field that the apple orchard is in. I need to brush-hog it down so I have reasonable access to it in the fall to pick my apples easily. There are a good amount of briar bushes starting and growing quickly in this area. Come watch me as I tackle this project. Here are some YouTube links to other project that my 4x4 Diesel Yanmar tractor SC2450 has been tackling.
