Yoga taught me that it wasn't the injuries that get in my way - like most things in life, it was the story that held me back. I practice yoga because it brings me back to the person I am and commits me to be the best I can. I teach yoga to share that.

Lisa has taught yoga for 10 years in a variety of settings encompassing a diverse student population. She is a masters prepared Nurse Practitioner which allows for her knowledge of medicine, physiology and nursing to accentuate her abilities to provide students with a holistic yoga experience. A certified yoga-fit instructor since 2000, she started her teaching in a number of Rochester health/fitness facilities. Lisa is very active in the Rochester volunteer community, having just completed her year as President of the Junior League of Rochester. She is passionate about introducing all people to yoga and has volunteered instruction to a variety of groups such as, the Girl scouts, Disabled teen girls, as well as senior citizens. Her classes are warm, inviting and encompassing. Her diversity is proven through her abilities to teach yoga foundations, vinyasa flow and restorative yoga classes at BREATHE. She encourages growth, connection and exploration.

The inspiration for “Just Breathe” first came about a little over a year ago when I overheard my then 5-year-old son talking with his friend about how emotions affect different regions of the brain, and how to calm down by taking deep breaths — all things they were beginning to learn in Kindergarten at their new school, Citizens of the World Charter School, in Mar Vista, CA. I was surprised and overjoyed to witness first-hand just how significant social-emotional learning in an elementary school curriculum was on these young minds. The following year, I decided to take a 6-week online course on Mindfulness through Mindful Schools (http://www.mindfulschools.org/), figuring that if my son was learning about this, it only made sense that I should learn too. Within the first week, I felt the positive effects of this practice take root not only on my own being but in my relationships with others. As a filmmaker, I am always interested in finding a subject worthy of filming, and I felt strongly that Mindfulness was a necessary concept to communicate visually. Thankfully my husband, who happens to be my filmmaking partner, agreed. We made “Just Breathe” with our son, his classmates and their family members one Saturday afternoon. The film is entirely unscripted – what the kids say is based purely on their own neuro-scientific understanding of difficult emotions, and how they cope through breathing and meditation. The thing I love about yoga is the fact that it's an infinite process. It sounds simple, or maybe it sounds anything but simple, but I love that it's the one thing on my life list that doesn't have a blank box next to it waiting to be filled with a check mark. Yoga is not something to complete or to succeed at or do to perfection — and it's that feeling I search for as a student when I take class and one I strive to provide when I teach. For me, yoga is a life-long membership with no expiration date in sight. I am incredibly grateful to the teachers in my life who have taught me, inspired me, and have each left a permanent impression on who I am as a teacher.
