Late in the year. What started as a small town ambition to sell pianos through social media had shown some promise as a standalone YouTube music video channel. We had a few videos under our belts. We had a handful of subscribers. We were building steam. We were loving it! But one looming, sour-faced, obstinate obstacle stood in the way. Reality. How could we sustain this? How could we keep this pace? We had robbed too much time away from family, day jobs; we were living two lives - nocturnal and diurnal - in an attempt to write music and film videos in every spare second. Our day jobs, including the Piano Store itself, saw a sharp decline due to negligence. Reality hit. It hit hard. Our music videos were not providing near enough to provide for our families, our number one priority. They say that the only difference between a large pizza and a professional musician is that a large pizza can feed a family of four! So we hatched this crazy idea. What if our genesis, as official full-time "Piano Guys," could be "crowd funded?" What if we offered special packages to people in exchange for their support to help us get our wheels off the ground? We launched the "Founders" program. We were cautious in our optimism, but we were completely overwhelmed. The generous support... When writing a song sometimes you just need a little spark. That catalyst came from a piece of classical music -- one that had such a "storybook feel" to it that we gleaned inspiration from it: Saint-Saëns' "Aquarium" from his Suite "Carnival of the Animals." It's an incredibly beautiful and transportive piece. You can listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCBDlC0N8Rc When we were finished we all stepped back and listened as objectively as we could, imagining what sort of story was being told in order to identify the best places to film. What happened surprised us all. The story itself took over. This video was filmed at Bryce Canyon National Park in cooperation with the Garfield County Office of Tourism. For more information go to http://www.BryceCanyonCountry.com. Thanks to Bruce Fullmer and Mark Wade for their assistance in location scouting and project management. See more of Bryce Canyon in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQA-qgjmfsw Story behind the song: Have you ever awakened with a melody in your head and you don't know how it got there? That was the beginning of our PianoGuys' version of David Guetta's "Titanium (feat. Sia)." Paul especially loved this tune -- he lobbied us to arrange the song, but after we could not find a way to begin the arrangement. Every time we tried it just didn't flow. We also were concerned that the hook of the tune was nothing but the beat :-) and lacked a lead melody, which would make it more difficult to convey with piano and cello. Steve woke one morning and couldn't get a melody out of his head. It was Gabriel Faure's "Pavane" -- a hauntingly beautiful melody that weaves in and out of richly sequenced harmonies and fluid counter-melodies. It had been a favorite of his as a child, but he hadn't heard it for years. In the studio that same morning we tried the melody over the top of the chorus of David' Guetta's Titanium and it was like witnessing a reunion of two childhood friends. The main melody of the Pavane and its supporting chords, transposed and changed stylistically to mimic Guetta, also fit nicely as the intro we had been searching for. And we thought since Guetta and Faure are both French it must have been meant to be! :-) If you're not familiar with "Pavane" Listen to a version of Bobby McFerrin singing it with La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IN-cY-f8Yqs (As a boy Steve heard this very version live in concert and it evidently had an indelible impression on him!) Classical music is such a big part of who we, ThePianoGuys, are. You can hear it in everything we write. We love pairing it with the music of today. This was the most difficult music video to set the "stage" for thus far. We considered so many locations -- a copper mine, a steel mill, an industry factory, a mountaintop ski resort, a wildflower meadow, a desert bluff, and many others. As you know we love putting pianos and cellos in crazy places (a common comment is 'how the heck did they get the piano up there??') -- places that show off breathtakingly beautiful landscapes. When Mark Wade with Garfield County's Department of Tourism called and offered full creative access to its national parks we abandoned all of our earlier ideas and focused on showcasing Bryce Canyon National Park -- an incredible place of raw beauty and geological history written in rock. It is a place like no other. We feel so blessed to have been able to film there. This video features a NEW STEEL cello made by Dawson Swan: Thor II -- with significant improvements over Thor I. It's lighter, easier to play and it looks awesome! Dawson is an incredible artist! Check his website out here: http://dawesome.net. Thank you again, Dawson! #thepianoguys #pianocello

In a world where we too often talk about our differences, we have at least one thing in common. We all struggle. Not in the same way, nor at the same level, but we all want a fighting chance. And we all share in one gift: The will to make the most of our lives. To take what we've been given and turn it into something better could be considered the sentient measuring stick of success. But to do so seldom is simple and more often requires we fight. Not against each other. But against the current threatening to drown the ambition in us. There is a tremendous purpose in struggle. It is when the struggle becomes so fierce that we must fight to swim or sink. John Newton, who penned "Amazing Grace," worked on a slave trader ship and condoned inhuman atrocities. As his ship was on the verge of being torn apart in a violent storm he called out for Grace. Once his feet were again planted on firm soil he determined to change. His covenant was written into these words, "I once was lost, but now I'm found; was blind, but now I see." Grace is the defining moment when we face and fight a monster poised to define us or destroy us. This song and video for us were a struggle, but a beautifully defining one. We chose the Scottish culture to depict the dichotomy between Grace and struggle. Who else is tough enough and yet delicate enough to don a kilt in battle? And the Scottish pipe and drum are the ultimate conveyors of melody and cadence. One represents Grace, the other the indomitable fight. Our dream was to film one of the most iconic castles on the Earth, Eilean Donan Castle in Dornie, Scotland. Grace somehow made this video possible. We had to postpone our trip to Scotland several times, and when we could no longer postpone we had to leap in faith because... We loved it. It combined two of the things we are working to accomplish -- inviting people to classical music and inspiring young musicians. Steven Sharp Nelson had soloed with the orchestra the previous year and loved the spirit and the talent that the orchestra showed at such young ages (ages 13-18!) Together we developed the concept of "Beethoven's 5 Secrets," combining OneRepublic's tune "Secrets" with melodies and moments from all four movements of Beethoven's 5th Symphony. We used 5 different melodies from the 4 movements of Beethoven's 5th Symphony (not including the "bridge" the orchestra plays in the middle). Try to guess where they are and where they come from! What are Beethoven's secrets? He had many. His most prominent secret that he desperately tried to keep from the public and that caused him to be considered extremely eccentric, irritable, and hermit-like was his "weakness." He was deaf during most of his life. Imagine that...one of the greatest composers that ever lived could hardly hear. And yet, he wrote his life's greatest works after becoming deaf. He believed that art itself had "secrets" that had to be "forced into" in order to obtain art's highest level. There is no doubt Beethoven discovered many of the "secrets" of art -- people all over the world enjoy them every day. He was a true master of music, blessed by God. This piece and video are dedicated to him. Everything you see is real snow and ice. Story behind the song: So who doesn't love a story about an estranged ice princess, a dynamic mountain man/reindeer duo and a snowman obsessed with warm weather? We all loved the movie "Frozen" and its single, "Let It Go." So much emotion, energy and drama packed into one tune. But we thought we'd add a little more drama...by melting together "Let It Go" and themes from Vivaldi's classical piece, "Winter." (You can watch an impressive performance of the original here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu6Hr9kd-U0 - see if you can find where we used the main themes from each of the three movements.) Vivaldi's almost reckless string motives helped us surround the determined, upbeat melody and chords from "Let It Go" with intensity and uncertainty. We wanted the music to alternate between "freezing" and "thawing," representing the opposing forces throughout the "Frozen" story. We were extra ambitious about capturing as much definition of the ice as possible so we decided to give 4K a try (a step up from 1080p HD) using the "RED" camera (same camera used in filming "The Hobbit"). So we called up our buddy Jacob Schwartz who rented us his awesome camera set up! It was challenging for Paul and Shaye to learn a whole new system and camera minutes before the shoot, but after awhile started getting the hang of it...:-) Editing the video on the other hand was a whole new process in processing that 4k footage. It took us 4 times as long to edit the video and fix glitches that kept happening working with such large files! After this experience, we might have to give 4k a try again, but not until we've mastered the art of it all which this video got us on the path at least. Special thanks to Ryan Davis and his way cool crew at the Midway Ice Castles for hosting us. They built this winter palace one icicle at a time. Amazing! They'll tell you about what's it's like to play the cello part of Pachelbel's Canon in D. It's the same 8 notes over and over and over again. The good news is, it's easy to memorize. The bad news is you don't know when to stop. There's a rumor floating around that says Pachelbel either died while writing it, never finishing the cello part or that he dated a cellist and it did NOT go well. This arrangement is dedicated to all the cellists that have fallen asleep while playing this song...or at least wanted to fall asleep. Steven Sharp Nelson actually began writing this arrangement while bored at a wedding. Ahem...all the bitter cello-malice aside, Pachelbel's Canon in D (written in the 1600's) has stood the test of time -- celebrated as the most recognizable piece of classical music. We like to call it the "one-hit wonder of the 1600's." It really is an amazingly catchy piece of music. It demonstrates the musical form of the "canon," when a melody is played and then repeated in a round by other voices. (watch how the melodies are passed from one cello to the next - right to left) ALL THE SOUNDS YOU HEAR WERE CREATED BY THE CELLO -- bowing, plucking, strumming, and beating the cello any way possible. This arrangement was written before ThePianoGuys posted our first video, "Michael Meets Mozart" - but we hesitated to film it because of how involved the idea was. We've never used "extras" before! So we put it off. And put it off. And then put if off some more. One day Al van der Beek was skimming through our thousands of messages on Facebook and happened to see one with the title "wedding" in the subject line. A woman emailed us about an opportunity to film at a big magazine spread wedding photo shoot. It was perfect--they would have the location, flowers, actors, and even a cake. Everything we'd need. To make a long story short, we excitedly scheduled our video shoot for the same day as their photo shoot, but a few days prior to the day it fell apart. After much discussion, we determined to move forward on faith that we could still work it out. Paul Anderson marshaled all sorts of connections and called on whomever he could and by nothing short of a miracle in a matter of days the wedding was all planned -- complete with a beautiful location, stunning decor, sharp tuxedos, fancy flowers, a photogenic bride and groom, 60 energetic guests, and an iced cake! The piece at the beginning that is just ending is Steven Sharp Nelson's 4-cello arrangement of "Thanks Be To Thee" (att. to Handel).
