How to Become TripAdvisor’s #1 Fake Restaurant

How to Become TripAdvisor’s #1 Fake Restaurant

The Shed at Dulwich was the number one rated restaurant in London, with foodies, celebrities and bloggers trying to get a table. The main obstacle for them, however, was that it didn't exist. Over the course of 8 months VICE's Oobah Butler used an assault of fake reviews to get his 'restaurant' to the hallowed top spot on TripAdvisor. With his phone perpetually ringing, PR agencies begging to represent it and TV crews pitching shows, Oobah decided he had no choice but to open its doors for one night only. Here is Oobah's journey into a false reality that captured the world's attention. TripAdvisor review of jail posted to Facebook by man who snuck iPad into cell - TomoNews

GRIMSBY, UNITED KINGDOM — I've given this place 4 stars. It's the all day breakfast that lets it down really...sounds like an ordinary review of a hotel right? Well, it's actually written from a man who was locked up at Grimsby police station in the UK on Wednesday. Christian Willoughby of Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire in the UK was taken into custody at Grimsby police station on Wednesday for an alleged 'misdemeanor'. He reportedly has a number of previous convictions including theft, burglary and assault. Willoughby somehow managed to smuggle an iPad into his cell and posted a TripAdvisor-style review of the cell on Facebook: "I've given this place 4 stars. It's the all day breakfast that lets it down really. Apart from that the staff are pleasant enough. Had my own on-suite room and butler... Who would come with tea and newspapers. Room was nice, the minimalistic idea was a nice touch. It was secure and safe... Quadruple glazing and security door. Ideal place for winding down after a hard day. I'd definitely come back". The post has since gone viral and has been shared almost 3,000 times on Facebook. "We take any such breach of security and detainee safety extremely seriously and will be carrying out a review of our detainee management to identify any lessons learned and prevent further reoccurrences in the future," Chief Inspector James Glansfield of Humberside Police told the Telegraph. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Hotel Review - Travelodge Chicago Downtown

Hotel Review - Travelodge Chicago Downtown

If you watch my hotel videos often, you probably know that I tend to select some pretty inexpensive properties (at least when I'm not traveling on business). It's a strategy that I stand behind. In fact, choosing inexpensive hotels is one of the reasons I'm able to travel so much. The key to picking a good budget hotel is finding a place that's safe, clean and comfortable. Dated decor and some minor problems are sort of expected. In this case, spending a night in the Chicago loop area for less than $70/night (when most other properties were $180+) was well worth the few minor issues I ran into, at least in my opinion. The circa-1920s building had a lot of character, the staff was friendly, the room was clean, and the bed was comfortable. However, there was a "special surprise" on the top shelf in the closet. That issue aside, this was a super-interesting property with loads of character that was lots of fun to review. Certainly not your cookie-cutter suburban hotel. What do you think? Good deal, or not worth the savings? Hotel Review - Club Quarters (River Hotel), Chicago

Hotel Review - Club Quarters (River Hotel), Chicago

Here's a tour of the hotel I stayed in during my August 2014 Chicago trip. Like most of my personal travel, I opted for this place because it was cheap. In fact, it was priced just a little above the heavy discount properties on this particular week (like the downtown Travelodge and Red Roof Inn). With that in mind, this wasn't a bad room for the money. Clean and relatively comfortable. It was no-frills, but that's to be expected. The biggest asset this room had going for it was the unbelievable view out front. Is anyone more familiar with this property than I am? I couldn't figure out what the relationship between the Club Quarters and the River Hotel was. Is it just a name? ("Club Quarters River Hotel".) Is the hotel spit in two? The elevator banks would suggest this. I booked a room at the River Hotel (at a steep discount thanks to hotels.com), and my room had nothing but Club Quarters stuff in it. Did they downgrade me because I paid so little? I really couldn't figure out what was going on here. Club Quarters seems to be some sort of discount business hotel chain with a bunch of cool services for frequent travelers. Wish I had gotten some footage of the club level where a lot of these features were. It was really cool. Hotel Review - Crossland Economy Studios, Independence MO

Hotel Review - Crossland Economy Studios, Independence MO

I like to say that I use my money efficiently when I travel (read: I'm cheap). Sometimes that "efficiency" leads me to book some questionable hotels like this one. I landed a room at the Crossland Economy Studios in Independence, MO for just over $30/night. Just about any clean, safe room is a steal for that price. Unfortunately this place failed a bit in the cleanliness department, but it's not the worst I've seen. What do you think? Good deal for $32, or would that huge stain on the mattress send you running out the door? Hotel Review - Best Western Grant Park, Chicago IL

Hotel Review - Best Western Grant Park, Chicago IL

First things first, obviously the "horror movie" thing is exaggerated. Granted, the public areas of the hotel were in pretty poor shape and looked fairly creepy, but the portion of the video made to look like a horror movie trailer is just a joke. Anyway, back when I was in Chicago for a conference in February, I was provided accommodations at this hotel. I wasn't impressed at all. Along with the creepy public areas of the hotel, I was given a room that had an awful mix of musty, stale air and cigarette odor. I then moved to a second room that didn't have the cigarette odor (though it still smelled a bit musty). However, the second room also had some basic maintenance issues. Until they renovate the property (and the manager says that they're about to start), I'd stay away from this property if possible. That being said, it's still doable.
