Get it here: http://amzn.to/2G5MuI9 What’s the story behind Toto’s classic hit “Africa”? Over the years, it seems like the band has been all over the place about this classic song whose mysterious lyrics draw you into a world where love and loyalty reign supreme. Watch this video to have all your burning questions about this huge hit from the 80s answered.
Toto has been around for a long time, and while their hits 'Hold the Line' and 'Rosanna' are equally powerful anthems, the band's 1982 rock hit 'Africa' has managed to retain an immense popularity. It's cheesy, it's emotional, but most importantly its sung with total conviction and sincerity. This contrasted with a time when pop is increasingly manufactured, 'Africa' generates an appreciation for its inherent 'wholesomeness'. This coupled with catchy lyrics gives the song an enduring resonance. Do you hear the drums echo in the night, or do you hear only whispers of some quiet conversation? Either way, we're taking a look at one of the most famous songs on the internet, Africa, by Toto. It sounds simple, but Toto was full of brilliant session musicians, and they managed to bury a lot of really clever touches in it, including possibly the most interesting piece of harmony we've looked at yet. Plus, it's got one of the most iconic riffs of all time, so that's pretty cool. Toto were formed in LA in the late 70's by a group of friends who were all much in demand session musicians. They went on to epitomise the classic American pop/rock sound of the 80's and 90's with hit albums and singles including Hold The Line, Africa, I Won't Hold You Back and the multi-Grammy winning Rosanna. Live In Amsterdam was recorded in front of a fanatical crowd in 2003 during the world tour in support of their album "Through The Looking Glass".
