Rum has medicinal properties, which were especially useful for armies at war until just a few decades ago. The British Army in particular was known to give rations of rum to its sailors, starting in 1655, when the Royal Navy substituted half-a-pint of rum daily for the previous allowance of a gallon of beer, and mixed rum and wine because it fought off scurvy . This ration was referred to as 'tot o' rum' and what actually prevented the scurvy was the dash of lime added to the mixture. later, in 1740, they realized everyone was far too drunk, so Admiral Edward Vernon ordered the rum to be diluted to prevent drunkenness. 2. Rum was used for other medicinal purposes, considered excellent for cleaning hair and strengthening its roots. 3. I bet you didn't know that Rum was incredibly popular in many other areas as well. The “Rum Rebellion” in 1808 was a revolt by the armed forces against the governor of Australia for his interference in trading and trafficking in rum. AND, Twelve million gallons of rum were consumed annually by the early American colonists. 4. The infamous Admiral Nelson who died in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, had his body preserved in a cask of rum when he died? Rum was then referred to as 'Nelson's Blood' for a period of time after the incident, and the daily rum ration was called tapping the admiral! 5. Rum precursors date back to ancient India and China and are thought to have spread from that area of the world, but it was sugar plantation slaves in the Caribbean who discovered that sugarcane molasses could be fermented and then distilled for to make that sweet sweet Rum. 6. Rum has had a long association with piracy but the origins of this began due to English privateers trading it as a valuable commodity, many of whom became pirates who were still hooked on the stuff. 7. Virtually every island in the carribean produces its own distinct rum style. More than 80% of the world's total output comes from the carribean islands. It's obviously one of the most popular spirits for cocktails, like the Rum sour, which was made in Barbados, and served in a conch shell!
