The Future of Trucking

The Future of Trucking

Imagining the future of the vast trucking industry that will become autonomous in the coming years. Subscribe for our newest TDC original mini-documentary: http://bit.ly/2pu8oNz Video by Bryce Plank and Robin West. More information on this topic: The future of trucking: http://tcrn.ch/2f1cx2Z http://bit.ly/2pyRU2K Tesla's electric truck: http://bit.ly/2nKwlQi Platooning: http://bit.ly/2eg8UKi Truckers discuss the future of trucking: http://bit.ly/2oG2MM9 Script: The semi-truck. Our modern lives are completely dependent on them. Look around you. Every object you see probably traveled on at least one big rig. Here in America, truckers make up 2% of the workforce. But with multiple game-changing technologies converging simultaneously — and the relentlessness of the hyper-competitive global marketplace — the industry will be revolutionized within the next two decades. This is an examination of the future of trucking. Before we get into the technology that will turn it all upside-down, we must first understand the way this extremely fragmented industry works now. To the numbers! There are about 3 million drivers for 2.5 million trucks in the US. Those trucks are owned by 532,000 carrier companies, but 90% of these fleets have fewer than six trucks—and half of all carriers are single individuals who own and operate their own rig. Then you have the middlemen, the freight brokers. These 13,000 companies play matchmaker between the manufacturers and wholesalers (who are trying to get their goods to market) and the retailers (who make the final sale to the consumer). Because this industry is so splintered, there aren’t universal software systems tying it all together. In fact, 67% of shippers don’t use software at all and rely solely on paper records—in 2017! This creates tremendous inefficiency. When every piece of information has to be communicated through human interactions, drivers are frequently forced to wait hours to book or pick-up a load. And sometimes they just don’t, an estimated 20% of trucks on the road are empty. To solve these problems, investors are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on startups competing to develop the silver bullet, a software layer that can be used by every segment of the industry. Another area ripe for modernization is how trucks are powered. Today, medium and heavy duty trucks account for 6% of the greenhouse gas emissions produced in America. To their credit, companies like Walmart are looking to transition to fleets powered by cleaner natural gas, the bridge fuel America has embraced to transition to renewables. That’s where Tesla comes in. Elon Musk, CEO of the electric car manufacturer, plans to unveil an electric-powered semi-truck in the next six months. Battery range will be the biggest obstacle to the widespread adoption of electric trucks as Tesla’s pack will probably only have a 200-300 mile range. The other challenge will be having enough charging stations — and enough power available at each station — to support fleets of Tesla trucks. The Nikola One attempts to overcome these limitations. This gorgeous, hydrogen fuel cell truck will have a range up to 1,200 miles. The young company plans to begin leasing their trucks by 2020 for about $6,000 a month — including the cost of fuel — but it will first need to build a network of about 400 charging stations throughout the country. Cutting the emissions of semi-trucks is great for the environment, but the real cost-saving opportunity lies in cutting out the drivers. It’s been more than a year now since six convoys of semi-autonomous “smart” trucks arrived at the Netherlands port city of Rotterdam after leaving factories from as far away as Sweden and Southern Germany. That experiment relied on a system called platooning, a semi-autonomous feature allowing trucks to find each other, link up, and draft to cut down on wind drag, saving energy—just like in NASCAR or the Tour de France. And in October, a self-driving truck completed the first commercial shipment by an autonomous vehicle, delivering a load of Budweiser more than 120 miles across Colorado. A human got the truck on the highway and engaged the autonomous system, then climbed out of the driver’s seat. That truck was made by Otto motors, which was recently acquired by Uber. And dozens of massive, 240-ton trucks are already being used in Australian mines. So that’s the near-future we’ll see in the next 10 years: fleets of driverless trucks. Some will be designed to be autonomous, while others will have the system installed later. Many will be electric, and nearly all will be connected to efficient networks that are not slowed down by frequent human input.

Canada is the U.S.’s more peaceful, outdoorsy, and rugged cousin. Canada draws U.S. citizens, and foreigners from around the world, across its borders for several reasons. Our northern neighbor provides universal healthcare (a hot topic right now in the States), competitive wages, and a relatively low cost of living. Canada is home to more nature than even the most avid outdoorsman would know what to do with. Perhaps the great outdoors has a positive effect on people’s mood, because when compared with the States, Canada has an extremely low crime rate. Curious about the lifestyle that lies just beyond our northern border? Here are the best places to live in Canada. (* All prices in Canadian Dollars. 1USD = 1.30CAD). 1. Ottawa, Ontario. 2. What the Pope Lamented About Enroute To Chile - Perspectives Daily

What the Pope Lamented About Enroute To Chile - Perspectives Daily

Early this morning, Pope Francis left Rome for a 15-hour flight to Santiago, Chile. This will be his 6th visit to Latin America, since his election as Pope. He will travel tirelessly to six different cities in under a week, with the mission of bringing a message of hope and comfort to the people of those countries.  His journey will begin in the Chilean capital of Santiago, where, in addition to saying Mass for the faithful, the Holy Father will meet with civil and religious leaders, then visit a women’s prison.  Wednesday, the Pope will go to Temuco, a city with a large indigenous population, before returning to Santiago for a meeting with young people. The Pope will spend his final day in Chile in the northern port city of Iquique after which he will depart for the second leg of his tour to Peru.   Aboard the papal flight, the Pope spoke to journalists, about his fear of a return to the use of nuclear weapons.  He shared with everyone on the plane a photo taken in 1945, of a Japanese boy in Nagasaki waiting at a crematorium to bury his baby brother, with the words: ‘the fruits of war’ printed on the back, alongside his signature. The Holy Father said he was very moved by the image and wanted to share it, because of his fears that the world is moving once again, towards the use of nuclear weapons. His comments come two days after residents of Hawaii received false warnings of an imminent ballistic missile attack.   You may recall, last November, the Pope addressed a Vatican conference on disarmament, saying the possession of nuclear weapons is to be “firmly condemned” because “nuclear weapons create nothing but a false sense of security and cannot constitute the basis for peaceful coexistence between members of the human family.” They exist, he said, “ in the service of a mentality of fear that affects the entire human race”.   Again, we will be broadcasting some of these events live on the network, so for details, be sure to check our website listed below.   Here in Canada, the Catholic Bishops are taking a stand against a new summer job policy implemented by the federal government, which they say, is a direct violation of religious freedom and infringes on the freedom of conscience. On January 11, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement saying that the new summer job policy that requires all applicants to attest both the job and the organization’s “core mandate” of support to the “right to access to safe and legal abortions,” represents a violation of the guaranteed freedoms of religion, offered by Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms, under Section 2. Government is required, at law, to be neutral in matters of conscience, However, it now appears the government wants to direct our consciences against our will. This is simply wrong, they say.   The Canada Summer Jobs program gives wage subsidies so employers can offer quality summer jobs for students aged 15 to 30, to give them work experience. The Canada Summer Jobs website, says faith-based groups, non-profits, and small business are welcome to apply for funding, but will now have to comply with these new regulations.   In other news today, the incorrupt relic of St.Francis Xavier made a one day stop at St.Michael’s Cathedral Basilica last Friday, during its 15-city trek across Canada. Cardinal Thomas Collins, the Archbishop of Toronto, spoke to the media about the significance and importance of the relic before opening the viewing to the public. Now the Relic has continued on its tour and moved on westward.  It will be at Winnipeg's St.Mary’s Cathedral tomorrow. For more information on where the relic will be, you can visit the CCO website listed here .   And that is all that for today. Join us again tomorrow, when I continue our highlight coverage of the Pope's apostolic trip to Chile and Peru.

Fenceline Communities on Gulf Coast Face Mass Displacement & Toxic Pollution One Month After Harvey

Fenceline Communities on Gulf Coast Face Mass Displacement & Toxic Pollution One Month After Harvey

https://democracynow.org - As many parts of the United States recover from a devastating series of hurricanes, we end today’s show with an update from one of the hardest-hit communities along the Gulf Coast. Port Arthur, Texas, is a fenceline community with several massive oil refineries that flooded during Hurricane Harvey. Just last week, a fire at the Valero oil refinery in Port Arthur released nearly 1 million pounds of emissions into the air, prompting residents to stay in their homes for hours. Meanwhile, the 3,600-acre Motiva oil refinery in Port Arthur says it plans to continue a multibillion-dollar expansion of its facility, which is already the largest in the United States. This comes as hundreds of displaced Port Arthur residents whose homes were flooded during the storm continue to live in tents. We speak with environmental justice activist Hilton Kelley, who made history in 2011 when he became the first African-American man to win the "Green Nobel Prize"—the Goldman Environmental Prize. Kelley is the executive director and founder of the Community In-Power and Development Association. His restaurant and home were both flooded during Hurricane Harvey.
