Iowa Pacific's Polar Express out of Batesville Mississippi operating on the ex--Illinois Central Grenada District. We catch the train a few times on a couple of the daylight runs between Batesville & Pope Mississippi being pulled by 2 of IP's E8's. Filmed December 5th 2015.
Passing through Horn Lake, MS heading to the CN Harrison Yard. Taped: 1/15/2015
Decided to travel to Batesville, Mississippi for what is rumored to be the last running of the Christmas themed trains by Iowa Pacific, through the Grenada railway. Along the way, I heard radio traffic near Lambert, Mississippi, and decided to see what it was. Little did I know, there would be more than one train. A day full of surprises. Just another addition to my railfanning adventures! Jack Gurner, Sr., Curator of the Water Valley Casey Jones Railroad Museum last rode in the cab of an engine in 1939. It was with his father, engineer B. G. Gurner, who was an engineer on the City of New Orleans until his retirement in the 1960s. Saturday, Nov. 12, he got the chance to ride an engine again thanks to Water Valley Mayor Larry Hart, President of the North Central Mississippi Railroad Authority. The ride was on the Iowa Pacific engine no. 550 decked out in old Illinois Central colors pulling the Polar Express train. Engineer for the journey from Batesville to the North Pole (conveniently located just to the south at Pope) was Caleb Swearingen of West, Miss., an engineer with Grenada Railways.
On October 23rd, 2016, the Iowa Pacific operated Grenada Railroad ran a short excursion over the former Illinois Central's Grenada District between Horn Lake and Batesville, Mississippi. The trip ran with an all matching consist resembling the fast, lightweight streamliner City of New Orleans, complete with two ex-C&NW E8s and three original IC passenger cars.
Iowa Pacific engines #515 & #518 idle as they bookend the passenger consist in Batesville. This excursion "The Train To Christmas Town" runs through December 27. I was mildly surprised to see these engines as I went over the railroad bridge on my way home yesterday, before remembering that the IP does excursions with these engines each year. The IP owns the Grenada Railway. I apologize for the camera noises. It is old and needs to be replaced by a real video camera.
