How Close Are We to Curing HIV/AIDS?

Current drug therapies mean it’s possible to live a normal life span with HIV, but that’s expensive and not a long term solution. What we really need is an HIV vaccine and a cure. So, how close are we? NASA Technology Finds Uses in Medical Imaging

NASA software has been incorporated into a new medical imaging device that could one day aid in the interpretation of mammograms, ultrasounds, and other medical imagery. The new MED-SEG system, developed by Bartron Medical Imaging LLC, a Connecticut-based company with satellite offices in Maryland, relies on an innovative software program developed at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. This software was originally designed to analyze imagery of Earth, but soon could be doing much more.

Reducing Cancer Patients' Painful Treatment

Reducing Cancer Patients' Painful Treatment

A NASA light technology originally developed to aid plant growth experiments in space has proved to reduce the painful side effects resulting from chemotherapy and radiation treatment in bone marrow and stem cell transplant patients. In a two-year clinical trial, cancer patients undergoing bone marrow or stem cell transplants were given a far red/near infrared Light Emitting Diode treatment called High Emissivity Aluminiferous Luminescent Substrate, or HEALS. The Marshall-funded trial included cancer patients at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital and the Children's Hospital of Alabama, also in Birmingham. The trial concluded that there is a 96 percent chance that the improvement in pain of those in the high-risk patient group was the result of the HEALS treatment.
