Polye means "field" in Russian, "polyushko" is a diminutive/hypocoristic form for "polye". It is also known as Meadowlands, Song of The Plains or Oh Fields, My Fields in English. The music was composed by Lev Knipper, with lyrics by Viktor Gusev in 1933. The song was part of the symphony with chorus (lyrics by Gusev) "A Poem about a Komsomol Soldier" (Поэма о бойце-комсомольце) composed in 1934. The original lyrics are sung from the perspective of a Red Army recruit, who proudly leaves his home to keep watch against his homeland's enemies. The song was covered many times by many artists in the Soviet Union, including a well-known rock version recorded by The Singing Guitars (Поющие гитáры), released c. 1967. The song has been regularly performed and recorded by the Alexandrov Ensemble, and it is listed in the Alexandrov Ensemble discography, best known as the Red Army Choir. The Seekers - Georgy Girl (1967 - Stereo)

The Seekers - Georgy Girl (1967 - Stereo)

Back in 1967, when The Seekers returned home to Australia for a visit, little did they know that their free concert at the Myer Music Bowl in their home town of Melbourne would break attendance records for the Southern hemisphere and TV ratings records for Australia! The concert forms part of the DVD 'The Seekers at Home and Down Under'. The group sang live on the day, but because no promo video existed for the original (1966) hit version of the song, it is this which I've used for the audio, extending the video to include the middle 8 bars. The DVD 'The Legendary TV Specials' with the live audio, (along with all The Seekers' hits and much more) is available to buy & recently spent several weeks at #1! You can see the original clip here for comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-GApOqzgWM Judith Durham's wonderful new CD, 'So Much More' is also available - http://www.theseekers.com.au/merchandise More of these videos on the playlists below: Best of the 60s in stereo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSxwqBJLU8A&list=PL3D56CE5573B8DB1E Reunion Performances: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOlPCmFG2pc&list=PL2D64FCB8BC9B767C The Seekers concluded their Golden Jubilee tour in New Zealand in November 2014, and Judith Durham began her farewell tour there in April 2016.
