Since he was a boy growing up on the border of Texas and Mexico, Dr. Torres has been fascinated by the folk traditions of Mexico and of his Mexican-American roots. Both of his parents were versed in aspects of herbal lore and healing, and as he matured, they taught him to love and respect the history and folk knowledge of the ancient art of curanderismo, or traditional healing. Currently a VP of Student Affairs at the University of New Mexico, he's never forgotten his love for the traditions of his childhood, and students come from around the world to take his summer class on those healing arts. While a crucial part of Chinese culture, the demand for Chinese medicinal materials has risen both in China as well as in international markets. China's economic growth has allowed Chinese consumers with high purchasing power to seek Chinese herbal medicine and other natural health products. The interest in using Chinese herbal medicine for wellness, medical treatments and longevity by people in other parts of the world has created new markets for TCM products. The development of TCM depends on natural resources so medicinal wildlife resource conservation is a precondition of sustainable use and continuation of TCM. Unfortunately, medicinal natural resources have declined rapidly, with Chinese manufacturing companies searching for large quantities of supplies inside and outside China to produce old-brand products and to develop new products for profit. The overuse of resources has caused a number of both animal and plant species to become extinct. The conflict between demand and supply is a big challenge for the development of traditional Chinese medicine and biodiversity conservation. In her presentation, Lixin will address how the TCM profession views these challenges and addresses them to promote healthy people and a healthy planet? She also discusses strategies that can be developed to bring TCM and conservation communities together to work with a shared vision to protect our one and only planet.

FILM DESCRIPTION: The fact-based story of an unconventional physician who attempted to heal patients with laughter, based on his own book and mixing equal doses of scatological humor and pathos. Robin Williams stars as Hunter Adams, a troubled young man who commits himself to a mental institution in the late 1960s. His experiences there convince Adams to become a doctor, and he enrolls in medical school, where he is appalled at the cold, clinical professionalism that alienates patients from their caregivers. Determined to provide emotional and spiritual relief as well as medicine, Adams clowns around for his patients, getting to know them personally. Although his efforts seem to work wonders and the hospital nursing staff is grateful for the levity Adams provides, his methods alienate his uptight roommate Mitch (Philip Seymour Hoffman) as well as the staff and faculty of his school. Adams perseveres, however, even starting his own low-cost rural clinic called the Gesundheit Institute, and wooing a pretty fellow student, Carin (Monica Potter). Tragedy strikes, and Adams' career is put in jeopardy, forcing him to defend his style and philosophy before a board of jurists determined to bar him from practicing medicine. Patch Adams (1998) was produced by former M*A*S*H (1972-83) star Mike Farrell, who met the real-life Adams when the offbeat doctor served as an advisor to the actor's popular TV series.
