Digital Leica Buying Guide Below is a list of all of Leica’s Digital Rangefinder Camera Bodies and some of their key features: The Leica M8 was released in 2006 and has a 10MP apsc size sensor and has brass body. A few years later they released an evolution of this camera, the M8.2. Apparently this camera had operated a lot more quietly, had much tougher LCD glass and also a slightly smaller and more discreet build. The Leica M9 which was released in 2009 and features a 18mp full frame sensor. Similar to the Leica M8, they released a second version of the M9 a few years later called the M9-P. This camera is almost identical to the M9; it has the exact same sensor with a slightly better LCD and more minimalist cosmetics. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it has nicer cosmetics, because really it is all up to taste. They chose to remove the red Leica symbol and instead have the Leica name engraved in the top plate of the camera. I guess this would be useful if you wanted to be incognito on the street and not have everyone know that you're packing a three thousand plus camera. In 2012 Leica released one of their most unique cameras ever, the Leica M9 Monochrom. Though this camera shares the M9 title it really is a completely new camera. It has a black and white only sensor, meaning that you will only be able to capture black and white images. One might rightly ask why in god’s name you would ever want a camera that could only shoot in black and white, when I could always just convert my images to black and white in post-production. Well seeing that the sensor is made purely to shoot in black and white it actually means that it has a much more nuanced tonal spectrum, so it has a lot more tone between true white and true black. Also having a sensor that only shoots black and white actually increases sharpness, meaning that though the camera still only has 18mp the final images will actually look sharper than those coming out of the M9. The Leica M-E (TYP 220) that was originally released in 2012 is basically a less expensive M9 but with a grey gun metal build, the sensor, setting and general offering are all the same. The Leica M (TYP 240) which makes the jump from the 18MP CCD sensor to a 24MP cemos censor. It also features the availability to shoot video for the first time. The Leica M-P (TYP 240) is basically the same as the camera I just talked about but with slightly tweaked aesthetics and a slightly bigger buffer for shooting rapid fire images. The Leica M-Monochrom (TYP 246) is basically an updated M9 Monochrome with a 24MP black and white only cemos and the inclusion of video. As one might assume, the video is black and white only as well. The Leica M (TYP 262) which seemed to signal Leica’s transition back to the basics. The cameras build for the TYP 262 was a lot slicker, the menus were made a lot less cluttered and complex and the video function had once again been removed. Lastly we have the Leica newest digital installment in their m series, the Leica M-D (TYP 262). This camera is quite unique. It is basically the same interworking of any modern Leica, with a 24mp cemos sensor etc. but this time the Leica developers have removed the back LCD screen and instead placed an old fashioned circular ISO dial. This is an interesting tact for Leica to take. They are obviously trying to appeal to film shooters looking for a digital alternative that will give them a similar shooting experience. Though I think this will work to a certain degree, it is a shame that by removing the LCD they were not able to lower the cost. Apologies for leaving out the Leica M10. When I was looking into buying a digital M and preparing info for this video, the Leica M10 had yet to be released. Here is a bit of information about the camera: it has a 24MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor, a much slimmer profile and build, an ISO Dial on the top of the camera rather than in an internal menu, a clearer viewfinder and better ISO performance across the board.
I often get asked about cheap cameras and also about cheap Leicas. Because wether you like it or not they produce a special look and colors that many find desirable. The X1 is the cheapest purebred Leica I know of. I know my way around the camera, I have been paid to take photos lots of times, but it has been more in a journalistic matter. On a hobby level I shoot and develop film as a cheap way to practice film exposure for my s16mm experiments. Lately I have been looking for ways to improve my skills as a cinematographer. One way is to become better at taking stills. If I can capture what I want in one frame, surely it must be easier with 24 frames per seconds. I'm still not decided between the M8 and M9, but time will tell. Made a little guide on things to consider before buying a Leica. This guide is for those with little knowledge of the Leica M mount bodies. There are a lot of things to consider when buying one so feel free to leave any questions in the comments. As for the tape on the vf iluminator window... *** "It cuts down glare in the rangefinder patch, works really well on sunny days. It does block the 50/75 frame though." Notice it doesn't cover the whole window, there's method to the madness! **** Thanks to Stefan for lending me his m4-2 and cron for the day. Best of the Best: Leica Cameras
I'd uncovered some lenses while I was doing the Spring cleaning, they were stashed neatly inside the boxes hidden from the prying eyes. I don't remember ever using them, so that makes me I'm a happy camper. These lenses are: Nikkor 50/1.5, Leitz Summaron 35/3.5 (M Mount), and the Leitz Summitar 50/1.5 I use the Summary 35/3.5 screw mount a lot, so I'm curious what the difference is between these two. Also, the Yellow filter !! Does it make a difference in digital black and white ? I've got a Leica R 35-70mm f3.5 for making video, this lens actually excites me the most, I have high expectation for this lens. Lastly, I found a sparkling new Leica M 50mm f1.4 V2 for a steal. Am still debating if i should use it. The lens cap for this lens is really stupid. SUPPORT ➜ Buy stuff in the Ben Aqua Shop ➜ http://benaqua.org/shop I took identical(ish) photos on the Panasonic Lumix G85 using the Panasonic Leica 25mm f1.4 lens ($600) vs the Panasonic 25mm f1.7 lens ($150) to see which one gets the juiciest, creamiest, buttery-est of all bokeh (blurry backgrounds). I was kind of shocked by the results 😱😱😱 Both lenses are incredible, but is cheaper better?? Or is it worth spending the extra $500 on the Leica f1.4? Find out who wins in this epic BOKEH BATTLE. #bokehbattle Both of these lenses would work great with any micro 4/3 cameras, including GH5, GH5S, G9, GX9, GX85/GX80, G85/G80, GX850, Olympus cameras, and more. ❒ FOLLOW ME ❑ Instagram - http://instagram.com/b3naqua Facebook - http://facebook.com/b3naqua Twitter - http://twitter.com/b3naqua + + + + + + + + + + + + + 📷 4K GEAR USED IN THIS VIDEO 📷 [ CAMERAS ] Panasonic Lumix G85/G80 M43 camera - http://amzn.to/2lKJJRV [ LENSES ] Panasonic Leica 25mm f1.4 lens - http://amzn.to/2BcrE7j Panasonic 25mm F1.7 lens - http://amzn.to/2pMOx8J Panasonic 7-14mm F4 lens - http://amzn.to/2qcptvO [ MICS ] Rode VideoMicro shotgun mic - http://amzn.to/2mcBkrz Rode NT-USB condenser mic - http://amzn.to/2eU0Z6z ✨ MY PHOTO/VIDEO GEAR MEGA-LIST - http://benaqua.org/amazon ✨ + + + + + + + + + + + + + ♫ MUSIC IN THIS VIDEO ♫ by Ben Aqua! ♫ LISTEN TO MY MUSIC ♫ iTunes - http://tiny.cc/b3naquaitunes Spotify - http://tiny.cc/benaquaspotify Soundcloud - http://soundcloud.com/b3naqua + + + + + + + + + + + + + ☯ WHO TF IS BEN AQUA ??? ☯ GREETINGS EARTHLINGS 👽 I'm a photographer & electronic music producer based in Austin, TX.
