Le plus vaste empire qui ait jamais existé Le 18 août 1227 meurt Gengis Khan (on écrit aussi Genghis khan). Ce guerrier intelligent et d'une extrême dureté, est le fondateur d'un empire de la steppe, éphémère mais plus vaste qu'aucun autre empire ayant jamais existé. Gengis Khan est né dans les steppes d'Asie centrale sous le nom de Temutchin vers 1155, dans le clan mongol des Qyiat. Son père Yesügai, le chef du clan, négocie le mariage du garçon avec la fille d'un chef de clan voisin, Börte. Mais Yesügai meurt peu de temps après. Orphelin, le jeune Temutchin mène une vie errante dans la steppe avec sa mère, ses frères et sa soeur. Ayant survécu jusqu'à l'âge d'homme, il va réclamer la main de sa fiancée. Chose promise, chose due. Le mariage consacre le premier rapprochement entre deux clans mongols. Rassuré sur son avenir, Temutchin se fait bientôt proclamer Khan et prend la tête de plusieurs clans mongols. Dès lors, il ne va avoir de cesse de réunir sous son autorité tous les nomades de la steppe, Mongols et Turco-Mongols. C'est chose faite au printemps 1206. Agé d'une quarantaine d'années, il se fait reconnaître souverain par toutes les tribus et se voit conférer le nom de Gengis Khan («roi universel» en mongol). L'événement a lieu au cours d'une assemblée plénière, un kuriltaï. Peuple nomade vivant de l'élevage extensif des troupeaux dans les steppes d'Asie, les Mongols bénéficient en ce début du XIIIe siècle de conditions climatiques exceptionnelles qui leur assurent toutes les ressources en vivres indispensables à de lointaines expéditions. En contact avec les peuples sédentaires d'Europe et d'Asie, une grande partie des Mongols a renoncé aux religions chamanistes traditionnelles au profit du bouddhisme, du manichéisme iranien et surtout... du christianisme de rite nestorien. Fort de son prestige, Gengis Khan rallie à lui deux autres peuples de la steppe, les Ouïghours et les Öngüt, installés aux confins de la Chine, et entame la conquête de celle-ci avec plusieurs centaines de milliers de cavaliers. En mai 1215, il occupe Pékin, massacre la population et rase la cité. Gengis Khan revient vers l'Ouest, abat le royaume des Kara-Khitaï en 1218 et se retrouve dès lors maître de toute la Haute Asie ainsi que de la Chine du nord. En 1219, il franchit le Syr-Darya, entre en Transoxiane (l'Ouzbékistan actuel) et marche sur Boukhara. La prestigieuse cité, riche de trésors de l'art islamo-persan, est occupée en février 1220 et sa garnison massacrée. Mais Gengis Khan s'abstient de mettre à sac la ville. Même indulgence pour Samarcande (ou Samarkand), le mois suivant. Il ravage là-dessus l'Afghanistan. Des centaines de milliers de gens sont massacrés à Bactres comme à Merv, augustes cités de l'antique Bactriane qui ne sont plus aujourd'hui que ruines dans la solitude. Pour le chef mongol, cette façon de terroriser les populations ennemies en les massacrant sitôt qu'elles esquissaient un geste de résistance, était la seule manière de les maintenir dans la soumission. Reprenant le chemin de la steppe, le conquérant meurt vers 70 ou 72 ans des suites d'une chute de cheval. Il laisse à ses quatre fils légitimes le soin d'étendre les conquêtes vers l'Ukraine et la Hongrie aussi bien que vers la Perse et la Chine.
