Flight: CZ319 Date: 27th Feb 2018 Route: Guangzhou (CAN)-Perth(PER) Plane: Airbus A330-300 with registration number B-8358 FreeBackgroundMusic Rival X Cadmium - Seasons (feat. Harley Bird) https://youtu.be/psgiZlNG2Fs
A beautiful takeoff with views of an A380 lifting off! The experience at check-in was actually good for economy with a ground staff member welcoming me for taking this flight and personally taking my luggage the short distance to the check-in desk. While the premium economy seat on CZ is pretty good (spacious leg room and bright IFE), food on China Southern's newest and long awaited route were disappointing. Food on this particular flight was barely edible, and service was odd with three small meals. I had better experiences with the food on my intra-China flight. Plane was equipped with mood lighting but for some reason this was never used until the end of the flight. While this is only one flight, it fits into what I have heard about CZ as inconsistent, especially in the context of my later flights with China Southern where the food quality was better. However, overall my experiences with China Southern is that the flight attendants are very nice and helpful, but management seems to make very odd decisions.
We traveled from Guangzhou to Sydney on a return flight with 2 little kids on the A380 snd this is a quick review of the experience, hopefully to provide an insight to any other folk looking at flying China Southern and wondering if it's a good experience. The options we had to get from Chiang Mai to Sydney were numerous but China Southern was by far the cheapest airline by a stretch. You immediately begin to think there must be a catch - why is China Southern so cheap compared to the rest? The answer is that there is no reason. In my opinion it's as good as any other airline I've flown in Asia, Europe or the middle East. The A380 was immaculate and very spacious, the best aircraft in the skies I believe, just so much space. The inflight entertainment was ok, the food was ok (for plane food) and the staff were friendly, helpful and professional. My overall review of China Southern is that it's a solid airline, good staff, great aircraft and the airport at Guangzhou is huge, modern and has everything you need for a lay over. I recommend china southern and I'm delighted to get back to Chiang Mai after 3 weeks celebrating Xmas with family in Sydney. This was a flight that affected my understanding about FAs and service industry in China. I ended up chatting with a flight attendant who really gave me an interesting glimpse into the life of a Chinese flight attendant. One of the things we ended up chatting about was a rather (in)famous? review by a blogger about the first class service onboard China Southern's A380, and the subsequent demotion of several of the first class FAs. One of the issues that was brought up in the review was the fact some FAs slept in the first class seats. I found out from her that often there are not enough sleeping space for FAs, and so rather than napping uncomfortably in the jumpseats (which is what I saw on this flight), they choose the empty first class seats. It turns out China Southern and other airline companies in China are very much aware of their brand issues, such as food, and often monitor reviews for issues related to the flight. However, instead of changing the food for the better, often the blame seemed to be placed on the FA's service. Another thing I learned was that FAs in China often face litigation and complaints from passengers for mistakes or issues that are not really their fault. For example, I heard one court case in which a passenger fell off the jump seat and hurt her back despite instructions not to sit in a jump seat. She sued the airline even though the FAs massaged her back and she told them everything was okay. Combined with the fact that China is one of worst countries for flight delays and FAs have been beaten by passengers who are angry about delays, these details really gave me an appreciation for their work especially facing the rather stressful skies in China.
