All applicants who want to register with the College of Nurses of Ontario need to pass the Jurisprudence exam to become a nurse. Info: http://www.cno.org/en/become-a-nurse/entry-to-practice-examinations/jurisprudence-examination/ Sample questions: http://www.cno.org/become-a-nurse/entry-to-practice-examinations/jurisprudence-examination/sample-test-questions/ It is best to pass it the first time you try. This video contains preparation tips for the exam so you can pass it the first time. Some information in this video is specific to Ontario, but the tips in it apply to preparing for similar exams in other provinces or states. ** Basic information such as the amount of time you have to complete the exam, number of questions on the exam, types of questions on the exam and the cost of the exam is all available on the College of Nurses of Ontario's website. Details for how to pay for it and complete the exam will be emailed to you once you apply to write it. Be sure to read through this information carefully. ** According to the College of Nurses of Ontario, the "jurisprudence examination assesses an applicant's knowledge and understanding of the laws, regulations, by-laws, practice standards and guidelines that govern the nursing profession in Ontario." It tests your competency in the areas noted on this slide. The questions on the exam test your ability to recall and understand information, apply this knowledge and think critically about complex situations. ** Yes, it is an "open book" exam, but you are encouraged to study for it. It is definitely not a good idea to attempt it without being at least somewhat familiar with the list of study resources provided on the college's website. Recent graduates report that the exam is difficult enough that you need to have some understanding of nursing regulations in Ontario in order to be able to complete the exam within the time limit. There are questions that you will want to look up the answer to. However, the questions are hard enough that you will likely not have enough time to look up the answer to every question. Plus, you need to know this information to practice safely in Ontario after you graduate.** To prepare, identify ways that you learn. Become familiar with the documents on the College of Nurses of Ontario's website as well as where to find information within these study resources. Becoming familiar with the information, documents, standards, guidelines, processes and legislations will help you do well on the exam and know where to find it as a nurse. There are many ways to study. The method that is best for you will depend on how you learn. If videos are helpful for you please keep watching. As long as the interest in these videos continues I am making a series of videos based on practice standards and guidelines to help students prepare for this exam (as well as classes and real-life situations). You can subscribe to my YouTube channel and/or website for more study tips and videos. ** Once you pay your exam the timer starts. So make sure you are ready to start when you pay for it. Be comfortable with the environment you choose to write in. You will likely want to choose a quiet location that is free of distractions. The exam takes a long time and recent graduates say you won't want to move places or even go to the washroom during it. So, it is probably a good idea to use the washroom before the exam. Make sure that the internet connection and speed of the computer you are working on is acceptable. Remember that you will likely have multiple things open at once. You will also want information to open quickly in the middle of the exam. The last thing you want is for your computer to crash during the exam. You also don't want to get distracted by hunger or thirst in the exam. If you want to have water or a snack nearby, prepare it ahead of time so you don't need to run to get it in the middle of the exam. Just make sure your environment is comfortable for you and is set up the way you want it.** Before you start the exam have the study resources page on the College of Nurses website ready in another browser. It can become distracting, confusing and waste time to open each link before starting. Instead of needing to click multiple tabs to find the document you are looking for, it may be best to simply open the documents as you need them. Then, close the document when you are done with it to avoid having too many things open at once. To find information quickly I recommend using Google, especially if you are not 100% sure which document your answer is in. You can use search terms like "CNO" to help the right documents come up on the top of your search. Once you are in the right document use the search function to help you locate the right part of the document quickly. A quick way to access it on a PC is by using the CTRL + F keys. http://youstudynursing.com/
