Sunday June 2nd 2013 A nice day for a ride! Thanks to Queen for the boss tune "Bicycle Race"
Bikes Not Bombs' Annual Bike-A-Thon is the most fun BNB fundraiser of the year and a great celebration of cycling, youth programs and BNB's international programs. Staff and volunteers share their favorite moments from past Bike-A-Thons and look forward to #BAT2014
This was the 30th annual BNB bikeathon, based out of Jamaica Plain in Boston. We were blessed with sunny morning weather on Sunday, June 4th, and lucked out from getting rained on later in the afternoon (as alluded to in 18:16). Like last year, I documented the 50-mile route again on GoPro, with a few recording tips to boot: 1) keep the camera turned off whenever possible in between shots to conserve power 2) from a bike mount, what's above the horizon is often more interesting than the pavement below. I wound up with 44 minutes of footage that I had to reduce by half on Camtasia. In watching the shots, I picked up a new tip from 16:52 onward - make sure the GoPro's glass lens shield is clean of any smearing from substances like, say, sunscreen lotion? I managed to $550 for this year's bikeathon, with many thanks to family & friends.
This year we celebrated the 30th anniversary of Bikes Not Bombs. Over 600 bikers raised $204,000. The four routes were different this year than before, ranging from 10 miles to 80 miles. I took the 30-mile route to Dover and back.
I had my nifty little GoPro camera (plus several other small digital devices) for documenting this route that stretched from Boston to Medfield and back. The jiggling sound that you hear in most of the bike-mount shots comes from my kryptonite bike lock. I used the Strava app on my iPhone (battery setting on low power mode) to get the results you see at the end of the video. And I managed to raise over $500 online for the bikeathon. All told, 730 bikers raised $193,729. photo album of the trip: https://goo.gl/Fw4wZU
