Watch: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivQE7ZCPiAo) How to Treat Baby Heat Rash You might think that only athletes or active people get heat or sweat rash, but babies commonly get heat rash, too. Heat rash is caused by clogged sweat glands which trap sweat under the surface of the skin. Since a baby's sweat glands haven't fully developed, they aren't efficient in excreting sweat, leading to a rash. Fortunately, most rashes go away on their own and there are things you can do to relieve your baby's discomfort. Recognizing Heat Rash on Baby * Recognize symptoms of baby heat rash Check your baby's skin for areas with small red bumps or blisters. You might see your baby scratching these prickly and itchy areas. * Determine if your baby is too warm. Make sure your baby is not overdressed and is wearing loose clothing. If you're not sure whether your baby is uncomfortable, look for the following signs that your baby is overdressed or too warm: * Your baby's head and neck are damp and sweaty * Your baby's face is red * Your baby is breathing too fast (more than 30 to 50 breaths a minute if he's under six months or more than 25 to 30 breaths if he's between six months old and a year) * Your baby seems irritable, cries, and fusses * Know when to see a doctor. Most heat rashes will improve on their own and won't need medical treatment. But, if you don't notice your baby's rash getting better within 24 hours, or if the rash is becoming swollen, painful, or has pus, or your baby develops a fever, call your baby's pediatrician. Caused of Heat Rash In Babies Heat rash is a red or pink rash usually found on body areas covered by clothing. It can develop when the sweat ducts become blocked and swell and often leads to discomfort and itching. In babies, heat rash can be caused by well-meaning parents who dress their baby too warmly, but it can happen to any baby in very warm weather. A baby should be dressed as an adult would be to be comfortable at the same temperature and activity level. Babies' hands and feet may feel cool to your touch but that does not mean they need to be dressed too warmly in hot weather. How to Cool and Deal with Babies Heat Rash at Home. * Bath your baby. As soon as you suspect your baby has heat rash, begin to cool him down. Give your baby a bath in lukewarm water to bring his body temperature down. Just avoid using cold water. Cold water could shock your baby because of the extreme temperature difference. * Cool the room. You may notice your baby is overly warm after napping in a warm room. Check the temperature of the room. You should keep the room at a comfortable 68 to 72°F (20 to 22.2°C) If you need to, turn on the air conditioner or use a fan to circulate the air. *Dress your baby in loose clothing. Remove your baby from swaddling or remove warm clothing (like long-sleeve shirts, coats, etc). Instead, dress your baby in all cotton or all-natural fiber clothing. This will help him cool off since moisture won't remain on her skin. *Use cool compresses. Soak a soft cotton washcloth in cool water and apply it to the rash to relieve itching. Once the cloth warms up, reuse the cloth by soaking it in cool water again. You can also make an herbal tea compress using herbs that have been shown to reduce inflammation. *Apply aloe vera. Cut a stem of aloe vera. Squeeze the gel onto the rash and spread it evenly. The gel will be gooey at first, but will soon dry. *Avoid applying creams, lotions, or ointments. While you can apply natural aloe vera gel to the rash, don't apply lotions, creams, or ointments like calamine to relieve itchiness. Some doctors believe it can dry the skin, making the rash worse. Heat rash, sometimes called prickly heat, is a common skin condition in infants and young children and occurs when the pores of the sweat glands become blocked. It is seen more often in infants as their pores are much smaller than those on an adult. Heat rashes are typically small pink or red bumps found on the neck and shoulders, and in skin folds on the legs or arms. While the rash will usually clear within a few days on its own, there are simple ways to treat it and prevent it from returning. How should I treat my baby's prickly heat rash - Newborn care. What is a prickly heat rash? If your baby suddenly develops a bright red pimply rash on his neck, under his arms, or near the edges of his nappy or underwear, don't panic. It's probably just a prickly heat rash. Prickly heat rash, also known as heat rash or miliaria, is a red, pimply skin eruption that can appear when your child overheats in hot and humid weather. The rash often appears in the folds of the skin and on parts of the body where clothing fits snugly, such as the upper chest, neck, groin and armpits. If your child wears hats, the rash may even spread across his scalp or forehead. Is a prickly heat rash serious? No, but it is a sign that your child is too hot. If you don't take steps to cool him off, he could develop a serious condition, such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke. If this happens, your child will be unable to control his body temperature. His body temperature may become much higher than normal and he could become dehydrated. What causes prickly heat rash on my baby? When it's hot and humid outside, your child sweats to cool down. If he sweats so much that his skin pores clog and sweat can't get out, a prickly heat rash develops. Babies and young children are particularly prone to heat rash because their sweat glands are not fully developed. A child can get a prickly heat rash from anything that causes him to sweat heavily, such as a high temperature, over dressing or from racing around in a hot environment. Your baby can get too hot if you overdress him, even if he just a newborn. Tight or heavy clothing can trap the sweat as well, contributing to the irritation. Ghee, oils and lotions used for your baby's massage also tend to clog the pores of his skin. Finish off an oil massage session with a good bath. This way you wash off any residual oils and allow your baby's skin to breathe. Is prickly heat rash painful for my baby? No, it isn't usually painful, but it can be annoyingly itchy, and the intense prickling or stinging sensation may be distressing for your child. Some of the pimples may also be tender to the touch. Your child may begin to tug his skin or scratch himself vigourously, when the rash starts itching. Trim his nails to prevent any injury or infection. How can I relieve and treat my baby's prickly heat rash? Most prickly heat rashes will clear up in a few days time unless the rash gets infected. Meanwhile, here are a few things you can do to relieve your child's itching and discomfort: Keep your baby cool: Keep your baby in a cool airy room or a shady spot when outdoors. If your baby is walking already, encourage him to slow down from time to time to keep his sweating in check. Make sure your baby gets enough to drink to replace all the fluids he is losing through sweat. If you must step out and about in the summer heat, make sure your baby's head is covered. You can even use a hand-held battery operated mini fan. On very hot days, it's best to stay indoors during the peak heat hours. The hot summer winds can be dangerous and dehydrate your baby. It is safe to use a cooler, fan or air conditioner with your baby in the room as long as he is not in the direct blast of the cool air. Even newborns need to be kept cool because they are not very good at regulating their own temperature yet. This means that they can get hot or cold quite easily. If you use an air conditioner, just make sure you do not set it at too cool a temperature or your little one might end up getting a cold. The changes in temperature from one room to the other can also be difficult on a baby. Do not carry him all the time: Try not to hold your baby too often. When he is in your arms, added to the hot weather, he also has your body heat to deal with. Try and teach your baby to fall asleep while lying in bed rather than rocked in your arms. During his waking hours, let him lie, crawl or walk around on his own. The less you carry him, the cooler he will remain. When you feed or burp your baby, make sure there is good cross ventilation in the room so your baby stays cool. You do not need to sit directly under the fan. Just keep in mind that being nursed and cuddled is likely to make your baby feel hot so you can maybe remove a layer of clothing just before feeding. Dress your baby appropriately: Synthetic fabrics, such as polyester and nylon, trap heat. Opt for lightweight cotton clothing instead. Where possible loosen or remove his clothing and give him as much nappy-free time as you can. http://www.babycenter.in/ Website: https://goo.gl/b4iYnw Fanpage: https://goo.gl/LmWMbM Mời các mẹ tham gia chia sẻ, tìm kiếm những kinh nghiệm, bí quyết hữu ích khi mang bầu, nuôi con nhỏ tại kênh Mr Ngo nhé!
