Cathay Pacific announces changes to Asia Miles – May 2018

Cathay Pacific has announced changes to the Asia Miles frequent flyer programme. In summary, more miles can be earned on most flights, there are more seats to redeem with your miles, and the amount required to redeem flights and upgrades have changed significantly. Firstly, the number of miles earned from flights are now standardised according to fare class and distances. All flights in the same fare class and distance band will earn the same number of miles regardless of distance. People who mainly buy the cheapest Economy Class tickets will benefit the most, because earnings have at least doubled for most flights. In one of the extreme cases, miles earned for flying to Shanghai will increase fourfold! Discounted Economy (fare classes M, L and V) and Premium Economy class tickets are a mixed bag. To put it simply, people flying regularly from most of Australia (except Perth) and North America (except Chicago and Toronto) will earn fewer miles, while people who fly regularly from Western Europe (except Dublin and Spain) will earn more miles. Personally, the number of miles I earn will not change much, because UK destinations are pretty much at break even point. All ticket redemptions will come in the form of one way redemptions. If you want to redeem a round trip, you will have to redeem a ticket in each direction. One way tickets will cost less or the same number of miles to redeem, but just how often will you need a one way ticket by itself? The most important change has to be that all short haul Economy Class round trips that cost more than 20,000 miles to redeem will now cost that much to redeem. You are looking at reductions of 10,000 to 25,000 miles, or 33% to 56%. Destinations affected include Japan and South Korea, which are very popular with Hong Kong people, as well as Beijing, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and India. In the meantime, Economy Class round trips to Australia, the Maldives and the Middle East will cost 1000 fewer miles to redeem, big deal. Upgrade redemptions are hit very hard by the changes. Upgrades from Premium Economy to Business Class flights, which are quite popular for long haul flight will cost over 50% more. But hey, as someone based in the UK, redeeming such upgrades is still the most cost efficient option for me. When it comes to short haul upgrades from Economy to Business Class (if your flight does not have Premium Economy), flights to destinations between 750 and 1100 miles from Hong Kong are the hardest hit, with a 70% increase in cost! In conclusion, Cathay Pacific is changing the Asia Miles programme to target the typical Hong Kong person, who stands to benefit the most given their travel habits. However, it is at the expense of long distance travellers. Someone’s got to give for others to take, right?

[Cathay Dragon] Do Marco Polo Club Members get Club Benefits when on a Group Ticket?

Have you ever wondered as a member of an airline’s loyalty program, can you enjoy club benefits on a group ticket? Welcome to my flight review. With my school, I joined the cultural trip to Nanjing in March. We flew in a group of 108 people on KA810. The operating aircraft was already 25 year old during my flight. It consists of 42 Business Class Seats and 265 Economy Class Seats. It was a meaningful experience as through this trip, I got to know more about the benefits a Marco Polo Club member can enjoy on a group ticket. Despite the excellent services I received on ground, the meal service onboard was disappointing. The flight was delayed for 30 minutes due to the late arrival of the incoming aircraft. Meal services began at 12nn but still, breakfast was served. The size of the meal was too small to make me full. What Happens to Your Miles When Air Canada Buys Aeroplan

What Happens to Your Miles When Air Canada Buys Aeroplan

Air Canada created Aeroplan in 1984 to reward Air Canada and its alliance members. Then in 2008 Air Canada sold Aeroplan, but still maintained its partnership. Last year, Air Canada declared to abandon Aeroplan in 2020 to create its own frequent flyer program and then this year (2018) Air Canada along with its partners such as TD, CIBC, and VISA have bought back Aeroplan for $450 million with its 1.9 billion miles liability. If you are one of the Aeroplan members and not sure what to do with miles after all these developments, I will shed some light today in simple terms, so you can get the most out of your Aeroplan miles. Cathay Pacific to award more Club Points for certain flights - Oct 2017

Cathay Pacific to award more Club Points for certain flights - Oct 2017

I have just received a newsletter from the Marco Polo Club of Cathay Pacific, saying that they will award more Club Points for flights on certain routes. Now, it is good to be sceptical at most changes to the Marco Polo Club, given how Cathay has messed up the status requirements last year. Naturally, there will be a lot of speculation as to what Cathay will do, so here's what I think they should do. They should increase the number of points earned from Economy and Premium Economy flights with 1500 miles or more. The change should be made to all fare classes, not just full fare. In addition, the ridiculously wide short haul flight band should be split into two, with a cutoff at 1500 miles and the new band from 1500 to 2750 miles earning as many points as currently earned by the Medium band. Finally, please don't lower the number of points earned by flying with other Oneworld Airlines, as they are already low enough as is!
