Alex Trebek Under Fire for Insulting 12 year old child on Jeopardy!

Alex Trebek is in a bit of social media jeopardy. The longtime host of "Jeopardy!" is facing backlash from Facebook and Twitter users over his treatment of a 12-year-old's spelling error on a special kids edition of the game show last week. Thomas Hurley III, an 8th grader from Newtown, Conn., says he was cheated out of $3,000 after he misspelled "Emancipation Proclamation" during the Final Jeopardy round. The answer had been, "Abraham Lincoln called this document, which took effect in 1863, 'a fit and necessary war measure.'" Hurley spelled the word "emanciptation" (with an extra "T"), and Trebek said he "misspelled it badly" and said the judges ruled his response incorrect. The boy hung his head, and seemed to mouth the word "what?" Then, the host noted that winner Skyler Hornback's response was spelled correctly. The decision did not affect the game's outcome; Hornback had an insurmountable lead. Still, Hurley is upset that he lost $3,000 over an extra letter. "I was pretty upset that I was cheated out of the final 'Jeopardy!' question. It was just a spelling error," he told the Danbury News-Times. His father is angrier, saying Trebek "basically humiliated" his son on television. "Alex Trebek was really sort of callous and smug, kind of condescending towards my son," he told radio host Fran Schneidau. The response from "Jeopardy!" fans was heated, with people falling on both sides. Some praised the show and Trebek for adhering to the rules, but many others blasted the host for his "smug" attitude. Who's Replacing Alex Trebek on 'Jeopardy!'? "The kid wouldn't have won either way — but that's not the point," Katie Wanta wrote on the "Jeopardy!" Facebook page. "The way Alex handled the situation was the issue, imo. He didn't need to go beyond 'it was spelled wrong and ruled incorrect, sorry' he didn't need to make a dig that the winner spelled things correctly and embarrass the poor kid for his mistake." Another viewer, Aymee Harvey Combs, chimed in, "I understand that rules are rules and with that being said.......I thought the way Alex handle the situation was terrible........He appeared as a pretentious SNOB stating the word was misspelled badly.........they are kids for goodness sakes!!!!!!"

Sony Hack Reveals Alex Trebek Considered Leaving Jeopardy! Over Kids Week Conflict, Re-Shoot Request

Alex Trebek doesn't always have the answers! The longtime Jeopardy! host reportedly questioned whether he should leave the show after butting heads with producers, hacked Sony emails (obtained by Radar Online) reveal. According to the leaked correspondence, Trebek was upset when he was asked to re-shoot a segment of Jeopardy! Kids in which he told a young girl she was in the red and would not be advancing to the Final Jeopardy round. The girl's mother wrote the show's producers that "was quite a bit taken back" with Trebek's reaction, noting that the longtime TV host failed to console her daughter backstage. It seemed that Trebek wasn't thrilled with the idea. Per Radar, he emailed the producers, "If you all think I should retape the opening, I will...But I want to say that for 30 years I've defended our show against attacks inside and out." "If I'm making mistakes and saying things you don't like, maybe it's time for me to move on," Trebek added "It's not a threat, but I want to let you know how I'm feeling." Per Radar, Jeopardy! Executive Producer Harry Friedman revealed in an email that Trebek calmed down. http://www.eonline.com/news/607280/sony-hack-reveals-alex-trebek-considered-leaving-jeopardy-over-kids-week-conflict-re-shoot-requests?cmpid=rss-000000-rssfeed-365-topstories&utm_source=eonline&utm_medium=rssfeeds&utm_campaign=rss_topstories http://www.wochit.com

Alex Trebek raps 'Bad and Boujee' and 'I Got the Keys'

"Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek made news this week when a clip of him reciting verses from popular hip-hop songs went viral. The day after the video became an internet sensation, we happened to be in Los Angeles to film an interview with Trebek and film what it's like to be on set during a "Jeopardy!" taping. We asked Trebek what he thought of the reaction to his rapping skills and asked if he would recite some verses from two hip-hop songs that are topping the charts. Watch as he tackles selected lyrics from "Bad and Boujee" by Migos and "I Got the Keys" by DJ Khaled featuring Jay-Z and Future. -------------------------------------------------- Follow BI Video on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1oS68Zs Follow BI on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1W9Lk0n Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/ -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider is the fastest growing business news site in the US.
