Sadly, Each year over 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States. Statistics prove that if more people knew CPR ,more lives could be saved. Seventy percent of Americans may feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they either do not know how to administer CPR or their training has significantly lapsed. This alarming statistic could hit close to home, because home is exactly where approximately 75 to 80 percent of cardiac arrests occur. Brain death starts to occur four to five minutes after someone experiences cardiac arrest if no CPR and defibrillation occurs during that time. Effective bystander CPR provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest can double or triple a victim’s chance or survival. In this episode of Matters of the Heart, featuring Pentucket Medical cardiologists Sunny Srivastava and Seth Bilazarian discuss Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation commonly called CPR. While nearly all of us have heard of CPR, only a small percentage of us know how to administer this potentially life-saving intervention. Dr. Bilazarian explains the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest is a frequently fatal stoppage of the heart, in which CPR can play a literally life-saving role. More than 600,000 Americans suffer cardiac arrest, and fewer than 10% of them survive. Cardiac arrest is a situation in which every second matters. If more of us knew how to administer CPR, more lives could be saved. And CPR is a relatively simple procedure, consisting of rapid chest compression. Almost anyone can learn CPR, and by learning it be in a position to save the life of a colleague, loved one or total stranger.
