Lyrics to Nena-"99 Luftballons." Sorry if there are mistakes; I speak a little German but not a native speaker ^^" I used a reference but sometimes the sources are wrong. Eh, whatever, enjoy! :D
Before you watch this video you should know that this is actually a club mix of the song so it sounds different from the original, this one was the only one they had on iTunes whenever I bought it. Also, I made this video when I was 13 and I realize the smiley faces are distasteful, but I didn't know that back then ( I was just a kid having fun on windows movie maker). I messed up on one lyric and I fixed it with an annotation. Hopefully this description sums up and takes care of all the negativity and hate in the comments. Enjoy.
Germany's 2nd national anthem: the best cold war song and probably the best anti-war song ever written. Sometimes things were so tense between east and west that something as innocent as an air balloon could set off a war response. This song plays on the ridiculousness of these national and political divisions. German Lyrics & English Translation: Hast du etwas Zeit für mich Have you got some time for me Dann singe ich ein Lied für dich Then I'll sing a song for you Von 99 Luftballons auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont About 99 balloons on their way to the horizon Denkst du vielleicht g'rad an mich Are you perhaps thinking of me? Dann singe ich ein Lied für dich Then I'll sing a song for you Von 99 Luftballons About 99 balloons Und dass so was von so was kommt And that such a thing can come from such a thing 99 Luftballons auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont 99 balloons on their way to the horizon Hielt man für UFOs aus dem All People think they're UFOs from outer space Darum schickte ein General 'ne Fliegerstaffel hinterher So a general sent a fighter squadron up there Alarm zu geben, wenn es so wär To raise the alarm if it were so Dabei war'n da am Horizont nur 99 Luftballons Yet there on the horizon were only 99 balloons 99 Düsenjäger 99 fighter jets Jeder war ein großer Krieger Every one was a great warrior Hielten sich für Captain Kirk Fancied themselves as Captain Kirk Das gab ein großes Feuerwerk That started a big show of fireworks Die Nachbarn haben nichts gerafft The neigbours didn't understand anything Und fühlten sich gleich angemacht And were feeling provoked Dabei schoss man am Horizont, auf 99 Luftballons So they shot at the horizon, at 99 balloons 99 Kriegsminister 99 war ministers Streichholz und Benzinkanister Matches and petrol canister Hielten sich für schlaue Leute Considered themselves such clever people Witterten schon fette Beute Already sniffed out a fat loot to plunder Riefen Krieg und wollten Macht They called for war and wanted power Mann, wer hätte das gedacht Man, who woulda thought Dass es einmal soweit kommt It would one day come to this Wegen 99 Luftballons All because of 99 balloons 99 Jahre Krieg 99 years of war Ließen keinen Platz für Sieger Left no place for victors Kriegsminister gibt's nicht mehr There are no more war ministers Und auch keine Düsenflieger And no fighter jets either Heute zieh ich meine Runden Today while out on my rounds Seh die Welt in Trümmern liegen I see the world lying in ruins Hab 'nen Luftballon gefunden Found a balloon Denk an dich und lass ihn fliegen I think of you and let it fly away

I AM SURPRISED that I didn't find a single video hosting a translation of this song on youtube, and translating from German to English isn't an easy task either! But here is the controversial song from the 80's. My lovely friend has provided me with a Finnish translation as well, so I will be doing that for fun in the future too! If I suck at German, please let me know, and let me know what I can do to make it better. Thank you :-)
"99 Luftballons" (German: Neunundneunzig Luftballons, "99 balloons") is an anti-war protest song by the German band Nena from their 1983 self-titled album. An English version titled "99 Red Balloons", with lyrics by Kevin McAlea, was also released on the album 99 Luftballons in 1984 after widespread success of the original in Europe and Japan. The English version is not a direct translation of the German and contains somewhat different lyrics
